Top Car Safety Features Don’t Always Save You Money

High-Tech Car Safety Technology does not always save you money

Are we spending way too much time protecting us from ourselves when it comes to car safety? All kinds of new technology, gadgets and safety systems are coming onto the market – not to mention government’s role in adding new legislation like bans on cell phones while driving – all for the purpose of making driving safer. Lately we’ve been asking if the top car safety features don’t always save you money?

But what if the problem has nothing to do with our need for whiz bang technology that keeps us safe? What if all we need is to become better at driving vehicles?

Case in point, and there is no accusation meant here, but is it safe to ponder whether the Toyota unintended acceleration issue was, at least in part, an issue with driver error rather than the need for better technology?

Understand that this blog post is not meant to say driving while texting shouldn’t be evaluated, nor is anyone making the claim that all we need are a few more driver’s education classes and all our problems will go by the wayside. That’s not the point of this blog post.

  • Although it is interesting to point out a survey on texting while driving conducted by the folks over at LeaseTrader.com.

  • Edmunds and the USA Today both reported recently that we should be responsible enough to ask this question. Are we simply adding all kinds of new technology and legislation just for the sake of protecting us from ourselves?

  • Heck, car makers are even introducing technology and top car safety features that allow the car to parallel park all by itself. That’s like not math in school because computers and calculators will handle everything. It sounds like a great idea until you peel back a few layers to find the consequences down the road.

Just as it’s important to learn math for the sake of shaping the brain and other critical thought patterns, it’s important to learn to drive safely rather than rely on technology to keep us safe from ourselves.

As a side note, it’s also like owners of professional sports teams fighting to institute a salary cap to keep themselves from the irrational spending on salaries only they know so well.

Now for the spending part. Being a safer driver equates to lower bills because you’ll (hopefully) get into fewer accidents and your auto insurance rates will be lower. Plus, if you simply focus on being a better driver, rather than the top car safety features, you won’t need to buy all those whiz-bang safety gadgets that promise to keep you safe in spite of your bad driving habits. While we’re at it, we’ll certainly advise you to keep save the phone call for when you’re not driving, which of course means you’ll have more minutes to use later on.

So do you think the top car safety features don’t always save you money?
